HR: Managing Legal Matters
Don’t let human resources issues take time and energy away from the profit-making aspects of your company. If you are the owner of a small business, join us on Friday, February 6 from 8:30 – 11:00 a.m. at the Chamber’s offices for expert advice on how to build stronger employer-employee relations and improve your business’ effectiveness.
HR: Managing Legal Matters is the second event in the three-part Owners Only series of educational, interactive, networking programs geared exclusively to owners and top management of small businesses. Designed to keep pace with the ever-changing business environment, the programs explore issues central to running a small business — from day-to-day operations to continued growth and development challenges.
At this event, professionals at MidAtlantic Employers’ Association will discuss employer obligations and variables for different-sized companies for compliance, compensation, recruitment and background checks, including differences for in-house staff vs. contractors.
First, Carrie Theisen, Director of HR Services, MidAtlantic Employers’ Association, will share HR best practices for small to mid-size organizations (5-100 employees). This session will explore the spectrum of HR issues, including:
- Top legal and legislative compliance issues facing companies
- Tips on where to get reliable compensation market data
- Understanding the merits of performing background checks for candidates
- Finding out how potential new legislation could change paid time off and family leave policies
Then, Jim Devine, Esq., President & CEO, MidAtlantic Employers’ Association, will discuss employer liability for supervisors and managers. Find out if you’re an asset to your organization when it comes to your relationships with your colleagues and employees. This session will focus on:
- The scope and breadth of protecting employees
- Ensuring a fair and equitable work environment, free from harassing and discriminatory practices
- Knowing where you stand and what you need to do to protect your organization and yourself
The Owners Only series is designed to provide plenty of time for exchanging ideas and exclusive networking with one another in a non-selling environment. Small business owners are among their peers as they learn, develop and share best practices.
The last session of the Owners Only program will take place on May 6, 2009 and feature a team of speakers from Bellevue Communications Group discussing marketing & public relations.
